Overview

Established in 1999, NSMA presents a unique opportunity for brands and companies to provide visible support to the student community and live music and gain exposure to thousands of students.

Over the last 10 years, the industry has changed and so has the National Student Music Awards and after a short break NSMA is back, providing more opportunities than ever before.

BBC, MTV, PRS, Musicians Union, EMI, Abbey Road, Sony, Maida Vale, Arts Council and many others joined forces to launch NSMA... And now we're ‘gettin’ the old band back to together’, with a few new additions to the line-up… New award categories, our new comprehensive live music website and more live shows.

The National Student Music Awards is a search for the best student band, singer songwriter artist, choir and contemporary ensemble whilst uniting student musicians all over the UK on NSMA.com to ensure NSMA is the most inclusive music event in the student calender.

Campaign

A comprehensive marketing campaign to target student community including:

  • An innovative on-line platform offering access and visible support of the
    student market
  • Ongoing campaign to student media throughout the year working with over 200 student media magazines, TV and radio stations
  • Posters at 600 student unions
  • Over 20 live concerts at Student Union venues across the UK
  • Main event at top Student Union venue

Statistics

Live music has never been more appealing to students or to those brands that want to reach them:

  • 43% of students regularly attend live music events
  • £9 million worth of ticket sales went through Students’ Unions alone in 2004
  • 2.3 million students in higher education
  • 1.8 million undergraduates
  • 65% of students aged between 18 – 24
  • 87% of first year undergraduates aged between 18 – 24
  • A total spend of £15 billion p.a.

Event Structure
Entry : Winter term 2010 – Feb 28th 2011 : To enter the National Student Music Awards, artists must create a profile page on NSMA.com, submitting 3 song recordings that represents the best of their music for judges to listen. Artists will also be able to submit a video if they wish and they will be encouraged to build their fan base on their profile.

Short listing : March 1st – March 15th : Our panel of industry experts will listen to all entries and short list ten artists from each category to go through to the live heats.

15th March – 31st May – Live Heats : 20 live shows over ten weeks featuring the top 40 artists. Two gigs per week at selected venues based upon location of the shortlisted artists and sponsor requests. From these events, judges will select the top three artists in each category will go through to the final events.

June 2011 – The Final
The final will take place in a nationally recognized Student live music venue and judged by a panel of industry professionals. Previous judges have included representatives of the PRS, BBC, Record labels and promoters.
